As we write silver is trading at $9.23/oz, gold is trading at $734.40 and the DOW has just dropped 427 points. The financial turmoil continues with the flight to cash alive and well. This very same flight has added strength to the dollar and kept the lid on gold from moving higher and indeed silver. The DOW finishes the day in negative territory, the rumour was bought and the news has been sold, however, the precious metals sector was boosted all across the board with Silver Standard Resources Incorporated gaining $2.01 to close at $8.32 (read more…)

As we write silver is trading at $13.25/oz, as it reclaims some of the ground lost in the recent sell off. Our strategy remains pretty much the same in that we still expect a terrific end of year rally in silver prices. As you know we have been buyers over the summer but this correction certainly hit us hard, however we have not hit the sell button and we will continue to hold fast. Our cash position improved with two successful options trades so we will be looking to deploy these funds over the next week or so. The above chart shows the 40% drop in silver prices and the subsequent bounce back to $13.00.

As we write silver is trading at $17.39/oz, as it continues to consolidate over the summer period. As we anticipated, silver came within $0.50 of its 200dma before turning north. The 200dma is moving up and now stands at $16.11, which will ultimately support silver prices going forward. As we write silver is trading around $17/oz, having pierced the magical $20/oz ealier this year. We anticipate this year being a good year for silver bugs; but we still expect silver re-visit its 200dma, which stands at $15.50/oz at the moment although it is moving upwards which will ultimately support silver prices.

Silver itself has made terrific progress to hit $18.00 gaining 24% since early December. The same is not true of the stocks as evidenced by the HUI which has gained 13% over the same period and languishes below its January high of 480.

We don’t often invest in junior exploration stocks, as we prefer to stay with companies that actually have some silver and are therefore leveraged to the silver price, as opposed to exploration companies that may or may not ever find a single ounce.
